We have been so blessed to work with Chris Diem in several OTE shows. He has been in all THREE Shakespeare in the Hills Productions. He is an incredibly talented young man. Here’s some of his thoughts on the show and the process:
What sort of person is going to love this show?
Anyone who loves Theatre! To me, Midsummer Night’s Dream is the classic that everybody knows and will enjoy, whether into Shakespeare or not!
What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?
To me it is how well known and how much Midsummer is done. I have seen so many versions of this show, but I hope to be able to bring something original to my character in the script.
Why did you want to be involved in SHAKESPEARE IN THE HILLS?
Many reasons! My main reason is that I get to act onstage with amazingly inspiring people who have become a family to me. Another reason is that my literal family is also in the show which is exciting! And because I never want to stop acting for one second and this show is a great opportunity!
How is this production bringing something new to this story?
The 20’s! What a fun era!
What’s going to surprise people about this show?
I can’t give any spoilers!! 😉
Call someone out by name: who must come see this production?
Alex Sharp who just won a tony would be cool… or Christian Borle… or even Daniel Radcliffe….
How is this character like you?
Puck is similar to me because I love pranks. Being a mischievous butt is one of my favorite hobbies!
What do you love about this character?
He’s a new challenge to tackle for me. Puck has been a bit of a dream role for awhile, and now it’ll be exciting to try out new characteristics and styles on him! Plus he’s extremely fun!
What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
Crossing my fingers to be able to do Puck justice. He’s iconic! There’s just so much you can do with him.
Besides yourself, what celebrity would you like to see tackle this character?
Robin Williams, RIP. he was so talented and would be perfect for this role.
Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue?
Thou speak’st aright; I am that merry wanderer of the night.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
An actor! Theatre is my biggest passion and there’s nothing else I wanna do.
If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would play you?
Again, Daniel Radcliffe haha wow he seems to be my go to celebrity… I guess it’s because we’re both short.
When did you first perform?
Sophomore year in high school! Tommy Ross in Carrie the Musical
Besides this one, what’s your favorite stage show?
Little Shop of Horrors… or Hamlet…. or Something Rotten… or Much Ado About Nothing… GAH DECISIONS
Who do you look up to (as an actor/director/etc.)?
The amazingly talented director of this show, Aurora Culver!
What’s your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?
Relaxing somewhere peaceful with a good book, or a long run in the morning
When you have a five-minute break during rehearsal, what do you spend that time doing?
Going over lines, or annoying Matt Acuna
Who’s the funniest person in the cast in real life?
Doug! Every year he has the funniest lines.
What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage / the curtain goes up?
Jump in place, run lines, crack knuckles, say a prayer, etc.
