This summer, On the Edge Theatre Productions presents our 4th Annual SHAKESPEARE IN THE HILLS. This year we are producing two plays in rep… MACBETH and TWELFTH NIGHT.
Auditions will be held the evening of May 23 and 24 at the Laguna Hills Community Center. Callbacks will be held May 25 by invitation only.

Performers CAN be cast in both shows if interested.
TEAMWORK IS MANDATORY
Actors not only perform but also act as crew members. Everyone is expected to be present for his/her performance evenings and participate in setting up the show.We must set-up and breakdown the set each night. It is a team effort where each person is assigned a few tasks. It’s a lot of fun!
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN FOR TWELFTH NIGHT
(Please note the role of VIOLA has already been cast)
Set during the American Revolution
Orsino – (male) a general in Virginia, is deeply and fashionably in love with Olivia. Her rejection of him leaves him in a deep and just as fashionable melancholy. Orsino is a vehicle through which the play explores the absurdity of love: a supreme egotist, Orsino mopes around complaining how heartsick he is over Olivia, when it is clear that he is chiefly in love with the idea of being in love and enjoys making a spectacle of himself.
Olivia – (female) A wealthy, beautiful, and noble lady, Olivia is courted by Orsino and Sir Andrew Aguecheek, but to each of them she insists that she is in mourning for her brother, who has recently died in battle, and will not marry for seven years. She and Orsino are similar characters in that each seems to enjoy wallowing in his or her own misery. Must be a risk- taking comedienne.
Malvolio – (male) The straitlaced steward—or head servant—in the household of Lady Olivia. Malvolio is very efficient but also very self-righteous, and he has a poor opinion of drinking, singing, and fun. His priggishness and haughty attitude earn him the enmity of Sir Toby, Sir Andrew, and Maria, who play a cruel trick on him, making him believe that Olivia is in love with him. In his fantasies about marrying his mistress, he reveals a powerful ambition to rise above his social class. Must be a comedian.
Feste – (male or female)The fool, of Olivia’s household, Feste moves between Olivia’s and Orsino’s homes. He earns his living by making pointed jokes, singing old songs, being generally witty, and offering good advice cloaked under a layer of foolishness. In spite of being a professional fool, Feste often seems the wisest character in the play. Must sing solo.
Sir Toby – (male) Olivia’s uncle and something of a minor-league Falstaff. A penniless drunkard who sets stock by his nobility of birth,. Olivia lets Sir Toby Belch live with her, but she does not approve of his rowdy behavior, practical jokes, heavy drinking, late-night carousing, or friends (specifically the idiotic Sir Andrew). Sir Toby also earns the ire of Malvolio. But Sir Toby has an ally, and eventually a mate, in Olivia’s sharp-witted waiting-gentlewoman, Maria.
Maria – (female) Olivia’s clever, daring waiting-gentlewoman. Maria is remarkably similar to her antagonist, Malvolio, who harbors aspirations of rising in the world through marriage. But Maria succeeds where Malvolio fails—perhaps because she is a woman, but, more likely, because she is more in tune than Malvolio with the anarchic, topsy-turvy spirit that animates the play.
Andrew Aguecheek – (male) A friend of Sir Toby’s. Andrew Aguecheek attempts to court Olivia, but he doesn’t stand a chance. He thinks that he is witty, brave, young, and good at languages and dancing, but he is actually an idiot. He is quarrelsome and a coward, a drunk, and very stupid. He is also very rich, though he does not realize that this is why Sir Toby appears to like him. Must be comfortable with physical comedy.
Fabian – (male or female) is a member of Olivia’s household who has lost that lady’s favor due to Malvolio’s telling her about a bear-baiting Fabian was involved with. A natural prankster. Must be comfortable with physical comedy.
Sebastian – (male) Viola’s lost twin brother. Sebastian seems an uncomplicated fellow, as quick to anger as to calming down, loyal and generally well-disposed.
Antonio – (male or female) A sea captain who rescues Sebastian after his shipwreck. Antonio has become very fond of Sebastian, caring for him, accompanying him to Virginia, and furnishing him with money—all because of a love so strong that it seems to be romantic in nature. Antonio’s attraction to Sebastian, however, never bears fruit.
Valentine – (male or female) is one of Orsino’s soldiers.
A Sea Captain was the captain of the ship that Viola and Sebastian were traveling on.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN FOR MACBETH
The Three Witches (Female, Any Age) Three dark agents of fate who plot mischief against Macbeth using charms, spells, and prophecies. Their predictions prompt him to murder Duncan, to order the deaths of Banquo and his son, and to blindly believe in his own immortality.
Will also play 3 murderers, Porter, Doctor, Old Man
Doctor A doctor called upon to treat Lady Macbeth’s madness
Murderers 1, 2 + 3 A group of ruffians conscripted by Macbeth
to murder Banquo, Fleance, and Macduff’s wife and children.
They become Macbeth’s personal guard and advisors.
Porter gatekeeper at Macbeth’s home. Pretends he is the
gatekeeper to hell. One of the few moments of comic relief in
Old Man mysterious man who speaks with Ross and
associates the murder of Duncan with the instability of the
Macbeth (Male, 20s – 40s) Macbeth is a Scottish general and the thane of Glamis who is led to wicked thoughts by the prophecies of the three witches . Macbeth is a brave soldier and a powerful man, but he is not virtuous. He is easily tempted into murder to fulfill his ambitions to the throne. He lacks the skills necessary to rule without being a tyrant. His response to every problem is violence and murder. Macbeth is never comfortable in his role as a criminal, though; he is unable to bear the psychological consequences of his atrocities.
Lady Macbeth (Female, 20s-40s) A deeply ambitious woman who lusts for power and position. Early in the play she seems to be the stronger and more ruthless of the two, as she urges her husband to kill Duncan and seize the crown. After the bloodshed begins, however, Lady Macbeth falls victim to guilt and madness to an even greater degree than her husband.
Macduff (Male, 20s-40s) A Scottish nobleman hostile to Macbeth’s kingship from the start. He eventually becomes a leader of the crusade to unseat Macbeth. The crusade’s mission is to place the rightful king, Malcolm, on the throne, but Macduff also desires vengeance for Macbeth’s murder of Macduff’s wife and young son.
Will also play Dead King and Apparition
Banquo (Male, 20s-40s) The brave, noble general whose children, according to the witches’ prophecy, will inherit the Scottish throne. Like Macbeth, Banquo thinks ambitious thoughts, but he does not translate those thoughts into action or violence, and is eventually murdered by Macbeth.
Will also play role of Seyton and Ghost.
Seyton Macbeth’s servant and chief advisor. He is an active
conspirator in Macbeth’s crimes and reign of terror.
Malcolm (Male, late teens-30s) The son of Duncan, whose restoration to the throne signals Scotland’s return to order following Macbeth’s reign of terror.
Will also play Dead King.
Duncan (Male, 50s-60s) The good King of Scotland whom Macbeth, in his ambition for the crown, murders. Duncan is the model of a virtuous and benevolent ruler, although he is too trusting. His death symbolizes the destruction of an order in Scotland that can be restored only when Duncan’s line, in the person of Malcolm, once more occupies the throne.
Will also play the role of Old Siward and Dead King.
Old Siward English Lord who aids the Thanes in overthrowing
Angus (Female/Male, late teens -50s) Scottish Thane, advisor to Duncan. Serves as Duncan’s messenger with Ross.
Will also play Dead King.
Lennox (Male, late teens -50s) Scottish Thane, advisor to Duncan. Favors Malcolm for ruler.
Will also play Dead King
Ross (Male, late teens -50s) Scottish Thane, advisor to Duncan. Serves as messenger for Duncan – desserts Macbeth in favor of Malcolm. Favors Malcolm for King.
Will also play Dead King.
Caithness (Female, Any Age) Scottish Thane and soldier helping Malcolm regain his throne.
Will also play servant/messenger, Captain
Captain Scottish soldier who fights in battle first with Macbeth,
then against him.
Donalbain (Male/Female, late teens-30s) Duncan’s daughter/son and Malcolm’s younger sister/brother. Flees to Ireland after father’s murder.
Will also play Menetieth+ Dead King + Lord
Meneteith Scottish Thane and soldier helping Malcolm regain
Fleance (Male, be able to play 8-16) Banquo’s son, who survives Macbeth’s attempt to murder him. Will one day become King.
Macduff’s Son- Macduff’s youngest son. He is strong willed and able to stand up for himself. Murdered by Macbeth
Lady Macduff (Female, 20s-40s) Macduff’s wife. She and her children are murdered by Macbeth in order to consolidate power.
Will also play Gentlewoman + Dead Queen
Gentlewoman (Female, Any Age) Lady Macbeth’s maid.
