Anthony Baratta plays “Shallow” in SHAKESPEARE IN THE HILLS’ The Merry Wives of Windsor opening Friday, July 19 at the Laguna Hills Community Center.
What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?
I would say, as in most Shakespeare productions, the language is always a challenge. It’s like learning a new language and takes a lot of time & practice. However, it always affords a great opportunity to create some really memorable characters.
How is this production bringing something new to this story?
It’s being set in the 90’s as a sitcom. That’s a really cool idea by our fabulous director
What’s going to surprise people about this show?
Just the quickness and sharpness of each character and how there’s really a lot going on but it’s still somehow easy to follow.
How is this character like you?
“Shallow” is a very no nonsense kind of guy, and doesn’t have a lot of time for idle hands, just like me, I’m a pretty on the go guy.
What do you love and/or hate about this character?
I just love how he goes about his business and deals with everyone directly instead of going on 100 different roundabout routes.
What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
Finding a way to capture his no-nonsense attitude without making him obnoxious.
Besides yourself, what celebrity would you like to see tackle this character?
For some reason I feel like Hugh Grant would be hilarious taking on “Shallow.”
If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
When did you first perform?
Been performing since I was 8… really started taking it up at age 16
What do you do when you’re not doing theatre?
Work front Desk for Marriott and make 1 minute sports videos
If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
Actor’s Bio: Anthony Baratta, “Shallow”
I’m absolutely ecstatic to be back with OTE after a 2 year hiatus. Most recently I
took on “Officer Barrel” in Urinetown at STAGEs theatre in Fullerton. I’ve been very
active in the SoCal community theatre scene where my credits include, Guys & Dolls
as “Nicely Nicely”, Beauty and The Beast as “Cogsworth”, and “Salerio” in The Merchant of
Venice. At OTE I’ve been featured in MacBeth as “Banquo”, Much Ado About Nothing as
“Dogberry”, and Midsummer as “Bottom”. Super Special thanks to Director Aurora Culver
for casting me in such a great role, and to the OTE community for having me back!!!
“O powerful Love, that in some respects makes a beast a man, in some other a man a beast.”
This summer, join SHAKESPEARE IN THE HILLS for one of Shakespeare’s most hilarious comedies, The Merry Wives of Windsor.
Sir John Falstaff and his entourage are wearing out their welcome in Windsor. The city isn’t big enough for his antics and appetites, especially as he sets about improving his financial situation by wooing Mistress Page and Mistress Ford. Meanwhile, Mistress Page’s lovely daughter, Anne, is under romantic siege from several local admirers. Double-meanings, disguises and dirty laundry abound as the men try to get what they want, but it’s the women of Windsor who pull the strings in this story…
Originally set in Shakespeare’s native land and time, this comedy shares traditions with today’s well-loved sitcoms. With its dexterous mingling of verbal and physical humor, we’ve brought it into the era of 90’s television, bringing elements from the show “Friends” and many more!
