Welcome back from the holidays! Monday, Jan. 11, On the Edge Theatre Productions began rehearsals for our next production, INTO THE WOODS written by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine. The cast and crew enjoyed meeting each other for the first rehearsal at the Laguna Hills Community Center.

12400601_10101803728530667_7587220197619499103_n

For those unfamiliar with the show, here’s a brief synopsis from StageAgent:

“’Be careful what you wish for’ seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, Into the Woods. The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighborhood witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their  family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. Also in the woods, we meet Little Red, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf who loves tasty little girls, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing after their loves. By the end of Act I, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after. But in Act II, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.”

Shows will be Friday, February 26 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m.; Friday, March 4 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 5 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, March 6 at 2 p.m.

All performances will be held at the Laguna Hills Community Center 25555 Alicia Pkwy, Laguna Hills, CA 92653

Not quite all there….. Sister Mary Amnesia played by Kerry Hedley in the female cast of NUNSENSE

Kerry and granddaughter, Holly.

Kerry and granddaughter, Holly.

What sort of person is going to love this character?
Anyone who has ever wanted a fresh start, who has a past they would rather forget, may find they wish they could be a little more like Sister Mary Amnesia.  People who are burdened by the complexities of their own everyday lives, may find themselves longing to be a little more like this nun who just lives one day at a time, looks for the silver lining, and spends most of her time trying to help others.
How is this character like you?
I too have things in my past that I wish I could erase.  Thankfully, I know that God no longer holds those things against me, because I have repented of them and trusted Christ’s death on the cross as payment for them.  My gratitude for that reality in my life makes it much easier to look for the good in others, and strive to see them as God does.  I try not to borrow trouble and just live each day as it comes, as Amnesia does.
Different?
She spends the majority of the musical not knowing who she is.  I on the other hand, am all too well aware of who I am, a flawed human being seeking to live out a life that honors my Creator anyway.  Amnesia’s motives and actions are in many ways more true and pure than my own, so it is rather refreshing to spend a few hours in her unassuming shoes.
Is it easier to play this character or to be yourself on stage?
It surprised me how easily this character blossomed within me the last time I played her.  Perhaps we have more in common than I understand.  My goal is an actor is to bring myself more on to the stage, through the roles I play . . . . to find the parts in me that line up with the person I am in the show.  I want to move past the point of just putting on the behaviours that my character would do, and move towards being in their heart, feeling what they would feel throughout the show.
What do you love about this character?
Her sweetness.  Sister Mary Amnesia takes everything at face value, and sees the best in everyone, except perhaps Sister Mary Annette.  She lives in the moment, which I suppose is easier when you have no idea who you are, where you came from, or why you are where you are (living in a convent, wearing a habit . . . . ).  It is such fun to travel with her on the road to discovering who she actually is!
What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
The first time I played this part I would have said singing the duet with myself and my puppet alter ego, Sister Mary Annette.  It requires two different personalities and voices singing the same song.  But now I know I can do that.  I think the challenge will be to keep Sister Mary Amnesia real – not to let her become a caricature, but be a real person, on the road to discovering herself, through her relationship with God and her sister.
Besides yourself, what celebrity would you like to see tackle this character?
How about Amy Adams?  I have seen that sweet quality in some of the roles she has played, but also the spunk to bring across the puppet duet and the big revelation song.
What makes a good scene partner?
An actor who is fully invested in their character – who becomes the role they are cast in. Getting that authenticity on stage, gives you all the emotions you need to respond in kind, fully authentic to your own role. It is a joy to work with each and every actor in this show, because they all work this way. This is going to be one heck of a show!!
If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would play you?
Oh dear, this is a tough call.  I am going to go with Mary Steenburgen.  She was born in the mid-west, as was my mom; she started dance lessons at age four, as did I; she sings, and is a little quirky, but sweet, which I think would suit my life story.  She is only four years younger than I am as well – but she has held up awfully well, and is married to the handsome Ted Danson.  Still, I am sure she could play happily single as well!
Who do you look up to (as an actor/director/etc.)?
It is always a great pleasure to work under the leadership of our director Dawn Doherty.  She is gracious and giving, encouraging while still challenging us to improve our skills and thus the show!  As an actor, I have always admired the skills of Sally Field.  Seeing her do the movie Sybil (1976), in her younger days, was an incredible experience.
What’s your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?
After a morning of getting my spiritual battery charged at my church, I love to take a nap in front of the TV, with House and Garden TV on in the background. By Sunday, I am usually pretty pooped, so I don’t tend to plan big activities then. And after the nap, a nice long walk around my neighborhood hills listening to Hooked on Classics tracks!!
When you have a five-minute break during rehearsal, what do you spend that time doing?
Lots of the time I just watch what else is going on on the stage.  Plus as the music director – if there is a song involved, then I am there checking melodies and harmonies and the like.  If I truly have a break, I probably am checking messages, emails or Facebook posts for a few minutes – checking in with the rest of the world.
Who’s the funniest person in the cast in real life?
In the women’s cast, I vote for Lanette Gutman.  She can be a little “out there” and scares me at times – never knowing what might come next, but she is funny!
In the men’s cast, I’ve got to go with Roger Sloan.  He is just a very funny man.  Perhaps that is why they are both cast as the Reverend Mother – they are natural comediennes!!
If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
That is an easy one – Light in the Piazza, with myself in the role of Margaret.
What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage / the curtain goes up?
Take a drink of water. In all candor – I also look in the mirror one last time if there is one there, just to make sure I am ship shape before I hit the boards.

susan head

How is this character like you? Different?

Someone (okay, almost everyone) has told me, “Susan, you ARE Hubert.” If I tell you I am a lot like Hubert, then I will be admitting to being less of a good actress. Hubert (and I) would never do that. Hubert likes to help people but is also ambitious. Her type-A personality frustrates her with her dear friend, Reverend Mother who never does things the way she would, aka the right way. We’re both snarky, eye-rolling, good women with a servant’s heart.

What do you love about this character?

She wants to be on stage just as much as the rest of the girls but she is worldlier and on some level knows the amateurishness of what they are doing.  She is embarrassed and tries to bring it up a notch which only frustrates her more. She can’t find the beat, longs to be able to sing Gospel and leaves it all on the stage.

What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?

Hubert has parts in 9 songs and is in most of the show. When I played her in 2013 it was my biggest role ever. The biggest challenge was learning the part well enough since there is no sneaking a peek at the script back stage in between scenes. And then there’s the dancing; I am not a dancer, neither is Hubert but we both try really hard.

Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue?

All my absolute favorites would give too much away; but my 6th favorite is “Sister Julia….Child of God.” …which is a running joke that the audience sometimes doesn’t catch –so there is your spoiler.

Besides you, which actor in this production is going to blow people away?

With only 4 other counter parts I could easily say any one of them.  I’ve done the show with them before and Rebecca is the one who has the audience at her Brooklyn Hello. She usually plays the sweet soprano lead of the show who has the prettiest dress and gets the guy, not a nun who can hot-wire a car. I love watching her transform into the naughty Sister Robert Ann.

If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?

It’s a 3-way tie between Amnesia, Robert Ann and Rev. But anytime I imagine myself doing another part I think, “but who would be Hubert?” and I get extremely jealous and know I am exactly where I want to be.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I would love to write comedy on a team or for a show.

I want to travel but with someone else making all the plans.  And let’s throw in that they would pay for it while we are at it.

If someone was going to make your life into a movie, who would play you?

Someone who is like a young Carol Burnett, Candace Bergen or Dixie Carter: maybe Tina Fey or Kristen Wiig. Yes I am going to be thin in the movie version!  Hey, it’s my fantasy and oh yes, they would have to be able to be awkward.

When did you first perform?

I sang in acapella chorus in high school but was too scared to do a solo. Also in high school I was in the Greek Chorus in Antigone and did ensemble in exactly one musical—South Pacific. I was on the debate team at Cal State Fullerton. I then worked on a cruise ship for a year as Social Hostess and got a lot of time on the microphone and led karaoke weekly in 1991. My first return to the stage was 18 years later as chorus in My Fair Lady where our director Dawn was Eliza Doolittle. I have done 21 shows since then.

Who do you look up to (as an actor/director/etc.)?

I love watching old episodes of Carol Burnett. I recently read her biography and she worked hard. She has amazing comic timing and except Jim Carrey no one has as many “faces.”

What’s your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?

Reading on the beach under an umbrella after a 5-mile barefoot walk in the wet sand.

Who’s the funniest person in the cast in real life?

It’s a close tie between Lanette and I. Do I get to make faces?

What do you do when you’re not doing theatre?

I help my husband David run a Financial Advisory/Retirement Planning business. I have two teenage girls, 18 and 15 who I wish needed me more; two twenty-pound Bichon mix dogs who are needy; I see lots of movies, read 4 books a month and lead a Fitness Accountability group.

If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?

The question is what 5 shows and the answer is, Dolly Levi, Madame Thenardier–Les Mis, Martha–White Christmas, Ruth–Pirates of Penzance, Mrs. Meers–Thoroughly Modern Millie, Grandma in Pippin. The list is longer; aren’t you sorry you asked?

What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage / the curtain goes up?

I hum to clear my throat, make a silly face as no not take myself too seriously  then maybe take some Lamaze-type breaths while saying “hee hee hee, who who who,” take a huge yoga breath, put a smile on and hope no one can see me tremble.

A preview of our girls “putting on a show”.

These same two casts of NUNSENSE have performed the show at least once before at another venue. Here are what audience members have to say about NUNSENSE!

“This is one of the funniest plays I have seen in a long time. It ranks right up there with the best. The solo by Mother Superior was rib-splitting funny.”

“The play was very funny with great singing and we recommend it.”

“The event was good fun. The cast was obviously enjoying themselves and did everything to make the audience feel appreciated. Gracious greeting, intermission mingling and fond farewells.”

“Wonderful entertainment!”

“Nunsense was fabulously funny! My husband and I took our teenage daughter and we laughed through the entire show!”

Laguna Hills, Calif. –  On the Edge Theatre Productions at the Laguna Hills Community Center is delighted to present onstage in February a musical comedy that will tickle your funny bone – NUNSENSE opens Saturday, February 7 and runs through Sunday, February 15, 2015.

NUNSENSE begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters, and they are in dire need of funds for the burials. The sisters decide that the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, which is currently set up for the eighth grade production of “Grease”. Here we meet Reverend Mother Regina, a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert, the Mistress of Novices; a streetwise nun from Brooklyn named Sister Robert Anne; Sister Mary Leo, a novice who is a wannabe ballerina; and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia, the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head. Featuring star turns, tap, and ballet dancing, an audience quiz, and comic surprises, this show has become an international phenomenon with more than 5000 productions worldwide.

Performances will be held at Laguna Hills Community Center, 25555 Alicia Pkwy, Laguna Hills, CA 92653
