Phil Seifert plays Lord Montague in OTE Shakespeare in the Hills’ Romeo and Juliet, opening this Friday, July 28 at the Laguna Hills Community Center.

What’s Challenging About Bringing This Script To Life?
The challenge of telling a story dependent on dialogue and emotions in an outdoor venue to an audience more accustomed to hand-held electronics and CGI special effects.

How Is This Production Bringing Something New To This Story?
Setting the story in Alta California in the years just before the Gold Rush and statehood demonstrates the timelessness of the themes of the power of love and reconciliation amidst the devastation wrought by hate and division.

What’s Going To Surprise People About This Show?
Discovering that William Shakespeare (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) wrote some of his dialogue in Spanish (or is it Spanglish?)

Call Out Someone by Name: Who must come see this production?
Matt Thomas and the team with whom I have the privilege of working at Know The Truth. Not to see me, but to enjoy live theatre presented by a talented and accomplished cast.

How is this character like you? Different?
I also am now the patriarch of an English/Irish family – although none of my children or siblings are involved in any blood feuds (at least that I know of).

What do you love about this character?
His willingness to forgive and to reconcile with Capulet, even though it has cost him so dearly. If we are not able to forgive one another for grievances, great or small, we shipwreck ourselves on a deserted island, even though we may live in a teeming metropolis.

What do you hate about this character?
That it took such a cost in bloodshed to come to a reconciliation. False pride and bruised egos have been the major cause of most of the grief and bloodshed over the entire course of human history.

What is the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
Adopting the mindset of someone who bears a deep grudge/animosity against another, to the point of losing his son. I savor the sweet taste of grace and forgiveness, while the bitter gall of an unforgiving spirit makes me retch.

Beside yourself, what celebrity would you like to see tackle this character?
Derek Jacobi

If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
Probably Friar Laurence or The Prince– although it would take more acting chops and comedic presence for me to carry off Friar Laurence. I would have no difficulty being the officious and haughty Prince.

When did you first perform?
In high school; in the middle years of the last century. More recently, (i.e. this century) after getting reintroduced to the magic and power of live theatre in small venues through Musical Theatre Village in Irvine and On The Edge Productions here in Laguna Hills. Twelfth Night was my first on-stage role with OTE.

Besides this one, what’s your favorite stage show?
It is hard to pick one out of the many available, but, if forced to choose, I would probably say Kiss Me Kate or Kismet. For drama it would probably be Mr. Roberts or A Man For All Seasons.

What’s your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?
After a week of constant activity between the radio ministry and the demands/opportunities of theatre, I like to just sink into the leather sofa in my family room (that sucks the life force out me), pay proper attention to the cat who shares my residence, and periodically checking to make sure that my eyelids do not leak light.

What do you do when you are not doing theatre?
I have the great privilege of volunteering for Pastor Philip De Courcy’s “Know The Truth” radio ministry and being involved with my church. Also, making sure that I meet the security, sustenance and sanitation needs of the cat who adopted me last year.

If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
Shakespeare: The Taming Of The Shrew

What’s the last thing you do before you step on stage?
Thank God (the Audience of One) and commit the performance to His honor and glory; and then remind myself of the secrets to a successful performance detailed by Spencer Tracy: know my lines and don’t run into the furniture.

Phil Seifert  was born in the early years of the middle decade of the last century (you all can do the math). He is retired after a 46-year career in the national defense and national intelligence communities including active naval service and am now blessed with the opportunity to volunteer with Kindred Community Church and Philip De Courcy’s bible-teaching radio ministry. He was married for 44+ years (and has now been widowed for 8 years), with two adult children and 5 grandchildren – none of them living in California – so he has time to get involved with community theatre. Phil was adopted by a rescued cat a year-ago who has granted Phil the privilege of meeting his sustenance, security, and sanitation needs, while retaining the absolute right to decide when and where he will grant Phil an audience. Phil looks forward to each day as another opportunity to learn new things and to make a difference in another person’s life – even if it is simply an encouraging word, a smile, a recognition of that person’s presence and inherent value as a child of God.

Kelli Griffin plays “Juliet” in OTE’s Shakespeare in the Hills‘ production of Romeo and Juliet opening July 28, 2017 at the Laguna Hills Community Center.

kelli

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?
The most challenging element of bringing this script to life is delving deep into
the words and understanding them well enough yourself that the message translates
clearly to the audience.

How is this production bringing something new to this story?
Our production brings a fresh perspective to this story in the way we tell it.
Setting the show in Alta California brings a new depth to the entirety of the show
and to the individual characters.

Call someone out by name: who must come see this production?
Ryan Fredericks. Be there or be trapezoid (because nobody really likes trapezoids).

How is this character like you? Different?
I think Juliet and I are similar because we are both strong, sassy, independent
people that are filled with passion and drive. We are different in that Juliet goes
to a very great extent for a guy and rushes into things, whereas I am a lot more
rational and levelheaded.

What do you love about this character?
I love the way that Juliet loves her life. She is fearless and is not afraid to go
for what she wants. Juliet isn’t shy and she is not your “typical ingénue”.

What do you hate about this character?
I hate the common perception and stigma of Juliet. People so often see her as weak,
unintelligent, and impractical, but ignore the strength she shows and her cleverness
and the reality that she brings.

What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
The biggest challenge for me is definitely taking the lines and bringing them to
life. Memorizing the lines is one thing, but interpreting them is a whole new game.

Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue?
“If I do so, it will be of more price being spoke behind your back than to your
face!”

If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
Mercutio, because she (he) is so sarcastic and witty.

When did you first perform?
I started actually performing at age nine, but I had done little performances and
choir shows at church from a very young age.

What’s your perfect Sunday afternoon look like?
Hanging out with all of my friends at Disneyland!

If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
The Diary of Anne Frank

Kelli Griffin is overjoyed to be playing the role of Juliet in OTE’s
production of Romeo and Juliet. Ever since she was a little girl, she has
been enamored with theatre and this little thing we call “show business”.
She would like to thank her director Aurora for her constant support,
encouragement, and for this wonderful opportunity. She would also like to
thank her parents and theatre family for all of their love. Lastly, she
would like to thank her lovely cast mates for all of the hard work, time
and energy they have poured into this show. Enjoy!

“It’s so easy to fall into the darker aspects of this play, but most of it is written as a comedy,” Max Sorg, Romeo in OTE’s ROMEO AND JULIET.

Max Sorg plays Romeo in OTE’s SHAKESPEARE IN THE HILLS production of Romeo and Juliet opening July 28, 2017 at the Laguna Hills Community Center.

max

What’s challenging about bringing the script to life?
The hardest thing is not letting the tragedy overtake the rest of the play. It’s so easy to fall into the darker aspects of this play, but most of it is written as a comedy. The tragedy of the play is allowing the characters victories to feel like victories rather than temporary respites before the final act of desperation.

What’s going to surprise people about this show?
How easy it is to understand the language. OTE’s actors have a remarkable gift of letting the language flow like it’s regular everyday English. The intention behind each word is so clear. I really feel like people are not going to be put off by the Shakespearean dialect, and they’re just going to see a really great show.

What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
Given that Romeo is such an iconic role, I need to find his voice in me. It’s hard because so many iconic actors have done this role, and it’s important to find my own take on the character without letting the other portrayals influence my work.

What do you love about this character?
Romeo is so in the moment. Every moment is so important to him, and he’ll get lost in moments of beauty and sadness. As an actor these types of characters are a dream, because you have to stay engaged with the script and be as connected as possible to each moment. It is also an incredibly humbling experience, because the character is so smart and so great with his words. He’s such a challenge to portray, but when I feel like I get him right, that’s the moment I did my job correctly.

If you could play any other character in the show, who would it be?
Mercutio. That character gets the best sword fight, the best speech, and the actor gets to sit back and read a book in the second act.

When did you first perform?
I acted out Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak to my parents when I was three or four years old. I had memorized the entire book, so I decided to put on a show for my parents.

What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage?
The first thing I do before going onstage is take a deep breath, and let the last thought I have as me go through my head which is usually,”Let’s take this one step at a time”. From then on, I know it’s going to be a good show, because I’m mentally ready.

Besides this one, what’s your favorite stage show?
I’m a Shakespeare sucker, so it’d have to be Hamlet.

Max Sorg (Romeo) is excited to be making his debut in the Southern California theatre scene. Max is originally from the Bay Area and has both an Associate’s Degree from Foothill Community College, and a Bachelor’s Degree from University of California, Irvine in Dramatic Arts. Max’s other roles include Agelo the Watchmaker from Comedy of Errors, the Countee Paris in Romeo & Juliet, and Claudius in Hamlet. In his spare time Max is also a musician and can be found playing guitar or singing with his band. He would like to thank his friends and family for supporting him, and hopes that you will enjoy this production of Romeo & Juliet!

“…now that some of the male roles have been cast with females. It brings an interesting twist to what the characters mean to each other,” Mario Arciniega “Tybalt”

Mario Arciniega plays Tybalt  in OTE’s SHAKESPEARE IN THE HILLS’ Romeo and Juliet opening July 28, 2017 at the Laguna Hills Community Center.

mario

What’s challenging about bringing this script to life?
I think it would be all the studying before hand. Definitely looking at how I would like to play the role compared to how the character fits in and trying to blend it all together.

How is this production bringing something new to this story?
I think there are interesting hints at fresh and different takes on relationships between characters now that some of the male roles have been cast with females. It brings an interesting twist to what the characters mean to each other.

How is this character like you? Different?
I think he has a confidence about him that is similar to me, but he is too hotheaded… which I don’t believe I am … yet.

What do you love about this character?
How iconic this character is. How he just changes the whole course of the play because of how hotheaded he is. Small character, huge key factor! Leaves a lasting impression with very few appearances.

What do you hate about this character?
I hate that he dies so early! Imagine what more mischief could have happened!

What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
The biggest challenge I think I faced early on was the kind of impression I wanted to give with every entrance and exit. I want people to know what this character is all about before he even talks. Which was also interesting since I’m using a voice I have never used before for this character.

Besides yourself, what celebrity would you like to see tackle this character?
Nicholas Hoult!

Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue?
“What? Drawn and talk of peace! I hate the word”

If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
Definitely Sampson… he is such a hidden comedy gem! I would love to try and get this role next time.

When did you first perform?
It was in high school! After a leg injury playing basketball I decided to take what I thought would be an easy class to get through. But fell in love when I was shockingly cast as the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland.

Besides this one, what’s your favorite stage show?
Othello. My dream role is Iago.

What do you do when you’re not doing theatre?
Reading Scripts, playing video games, and basketball.

If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next?
I would like to tackle Petruchio in Taming of the Shrew.

What’s the last thing you do before you step out on stage?
I try to go through all of the emotional breaths I take. My method of acting definitely depends on my breath. I try to breath how I naturally would depending on my emotional situation, since we all breathe differently depending on our moods.

Mario Arciniega is an East Los Angeles actor who has many experiences performing Shakespeare with characters like Benedick, Demetrius, and Lucio under his belt. Taking many Shakespeare and Improv classes he hopes to one day perform at the Shakespeare Oregon Festival and Griffith Park. Mario would like to take thank his Mom and Dad for pushing him to keep going, his brother Thomas for always setting the bar to which he hopes to achieve, and Alexis Tapia for always being there to run lines and encouraging him to do better.

“I love that we have Spanish translations of the text throughout the play…” Kaitlyn Smith

Headshot Kaitlyn Smith

Kaitlyn Smith plays Mercutio in OTE’s Romeo and Juliet opening July 28 at the Laguna Hills Community Center.

How is this production bringing something new to this story?
I love that we have Spanish translations of the text throughout the play. With the setting and historical context we have, I think it enhances the text and enables the actors using it to play and have fun in a new way.

Call someone out by name who must come see this production?
EMMERY!

What do you love about this character?
Mercutio has a lot of freedom to play with other characters and the language. She is not restricted to one family and she is able to get away with almost anything due to her relation to the Prince. She is very verbose and gives her opinions whether people want to hear or not, which is extremely fun to play within interactions with the other characters.

What’s the biggest challenge about taking on this role?
Mercutio is one of the most iconic characters in Shakespeare. It’s been challenging to take on a role that many people have their own ideas about and not leaning too hard on other performances I’ve seen. I’ve been working on making it my own while remaining true to the director’s vision.

Without giving anything away, what’s your favorite line of dialogue? “Thou hast most kindly hit it!”

If you could play any other character in this show, who would it be?
I’ve always wanted to play Tybalt! He has some intensely fun insults for other character and some awesome fight scenes.

When did you first perform? In 4th grade we did a musical called “A is for Aesop”. I joined choir halfway through the year just so I could be in the show and I ended up with a pretty fun part. I remember hamming it up at 10 years old.

What do you do when you’re not doing theatre? Working mostly, traveling when I can, and generally clowning around!

If you had a magic wand, what show would you do next? “Noises Off”! I’ve always wanted to be in that show!

Kaitlyn Smith is excited to return to this season of OTE’s Shakespeare in the Hills! She is a graduate of the University of California, Irvine with Honors in Acting. Previous favorite appearances include On the Edge Theater Production’s Twelfth Night (Maria), University of California’s the Importance of Being Earnest (Lady Bracknell) and Threepenny Opera (Honey the Beggar), Shakespeare by the Sea’s Much Ado About Nothing (Ursula/Hugh Oatcake), and Orange County High School of the Art’s Dearly Departed (Delightful). She is literally a clown in her spare time. Thanks to the amazing Aurora Culver for this opportunity, and thanks to her family and friends for their constant love and support.

Haley Dukelow

Haley Dukelow plays a Sound Doctor- one of the foley artists in
EARBUD THEATER: INVASION

Describe the character(s) you play in 3 sentences or less. I play a mad sound doctor who helps bring Invasion to life!

What similarities do you share with your character? I love being trapped in a laboratory doing dark biddings; like studying taxol-like compounds from giant green anemones.

How are you different from your character? It’s hard to stay silent for hours.

What professional actor do you admire and why? Jodie Foster because she can do anything and does everything.

If acting is not your day job, what is? The world of medical devices.

Describe your perfect Sunday afternoon. Getting coffee at Groundworks – seeing a film at the Arclight – strolling through the Hollywood Forever Cemetery – seeing a show at USB – getting home with no traffic.

Call out someone who MUST see your show! Ricky Gervais.

Haley Dukelow was most recently seen as Emily in Our Town at The Attic Theatre. Other recent regional credits include: Dracula, Annie, and The Odd Couple. She served as dance and fight choreographer for the production of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, Aladdin and Man of La Mancha. Witness the Invasion at the Studio Theater at Long Beach Playhouse. The Sound Doctors of the Earbud Theater lair have cooked up more audio theater to delight and disturb your fragile human minds; but even as they’re proudly presenting strange tales of a heist taking place inside a giant robot, and a signal from beyond our solar system, something may be coming for them, and everyone in the audience, too…

We are thrilled to announce auditions for our upcoming production of EARBUD THEATER: INVASION!

EARBUD THEATER: INVASION! is a double feature of original science fiction radio plays from the award-winning podcast Earbud Theater. Featured at this unique live performance will be “Escape! (The End of Humanity Song)”, as well as the world premiere of their new script “The Mektalos Caper”. Both scripts are written by Nicholas Thurkettle. A joint presentation by Earbud Theater and On The Edge Theatre Productions; produced by Aurora J. Culver and Nicholas Thurkettle, directed by Elizabeth Susanne, with sound design by Head Sound Doctor Darren Lodwick. Earbud Theater was created by Casey Wolfe.

BY APPOINTMENT ONLY- Please email Aurora Culver at ajculver@otetheatre.com to set up your audition appointment for EARBUD THEATER: INVASION. Further details for the audition will be emailed to you.

Auditions will be held the evenings of December 5th and 6th at 3730 South Susan St. Suite 100, Costa Mesa.

Auditions will consist of performing selected readings from the show.

Rehearsals will begin last week of December, scheduled with actor availability taken in to account. Mandatory rehearsals January 9th-12th at Long Beach Playhouse.

Performances will be at the Long Beach Playhouse in their Studio Theater on January 13th and 14th at 8pm.

Character Breakdowns

Sound Doctors – Live foley artists for our show. Generally will not have any speaking capacity, in the traditional sense, but will communicate and be involved through visual gags and sound effects. As a Sound Doctor, you’ll be working primarily with the Sound Director, though you may get direction from the show Director as well.

Being a Sound Dr will involve the following:

– Setting up & breaking the live foley workstation (may require lifting and moving objects of up to 20-30 lbs)

– Managing sound props

– Performing live foley sound effects

– Playing sound cues from a laptop

– Any other sound tech duties as they arise

All while being goofy and awkward scientists in front of the audience (this is a live show, after all!)

Cast Roles

The cast will play/voice multiple characters for the performance. Below are the characters of the two radio plays performed during the course of the evening. Each actor will play at least one character in both stories.

THE MEKTALOS CAPER

ROBBIE ISAAC – Co-mastermind of the heist, posing as a tourist yokel, married to MARIA

MARIA ISAAC– Co-mastermind of the heist, posing as a tourist yokel, married to ROBBIE

DORIS – The tour guide trying patiently to separate fact from fiction, AND sell the public version of what happened in that Giant Robot fight

JAMESON – Doris’s robot sidekick that she uses to tell jokes; it secretly despises her and is helping plan the heist

MEKTALOS SUPERIOR – The Giant Robot that came to Earth, was defeated 18 years ago and has been seemingly dead ever since.

ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS- Brief appearances from assorted scientists, tourists, robots, and talking security devices.

ESCAPE! (THE END OF HUMANITY SONG)

PERLA LABAT-BENNINGFIELD – Whip-smart scientist driven by a need to prove herself. Capable of throwing her whole heart at solving a problem or completely dismantling you with sarcasm. Sister to Garland.

GARLAND LABAT – Cynical, hides behind a facade of carefree humor; has estranged himself from his family but can’t seem to forge lasting connections with anyone. Brother to Perla.

MARLIN LABAT (50’s/60’s) – Brilliant, eccentric, world-renowned, a scientist ranked among the great geniuses of the human race; with the side effect of being occasionally woolly about daily life and the present emotional needs of those around him. Father to Garland and Perla.

JOHN/JAN MALOOF (50’s) – Patient, capable attorney accustomed to executing the strange requests of his wealthiest client.

ALEX/ANNA (20’s) – John/Jan Maloof’s eager-to-please assistant

ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS- FLIGHT ATTENDANT, WAITER
